ONE OF CANADA’S OLDEST AND MOST STORIED SPORTING TRADITIONS SET FOR THIS SATURDAY

Coverage of The 161st running of The Queen’s Plate begins at 4:30pm ET on CTV and TSN

Toronto, On – September 10, 2020 – The 161st running of The Queen’s Plate will take place this Saturday, September 12 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, allowing it to remain as the longest continuously run horse race in North America.

“We are so proud and excited to have the opportunity to continue the storied tradition of The Queen’s Plate this year amid a global pandemic,” said Jim Lawson, CEO, Woodbine Entertainment. “Back in March when we started contemplating what horse racing in Ontario might look like this year, one of our goals was to keep The Queen’s Plate as North America’s longest continuously run horse race and here we are.”

Coverage of the 161st Queen’s Plate starts at 4:30pm ET on CTV and TSN. The Queen’s Plate Preview Show on TSN will air on Friday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Older than the Grey Cup and Stanley Cup, The Queen’s Plate is for three-year-old Thoroughbreds foaled in Canada and is the first jewel of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown. The first Queen’s Plate was held in 1860. This year’s race features a competitive field of 14 horses.

Originally scheduled for June 27, The 2020 Queen’s Plate was postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Typically attended by tens of thousands of spectators each year, this year’s event will not be open to the general public due to ongoing health and safety precautions regarding COVID-19.

Without the general public in attendance, Woodbine Entertainment announced plans to bring one of Canada’s most prestigious events and storied traditions directly to fans like never before.

The digital-first experience will largely live on Woodbine Entertainment’s Instagram channel @WoodbineTB and will feature content anchored in the event’s longstanding traditions of fashion, gourmet food, music, wagering and world-class Thoroughbred racing.

This year’s QP @ Home experience is captured in this video.

Kicking off at Noon ET on Saturday, September 12, The Queen’s Plate @ Home will engage with fans from coast-to-coast and culminate with the live broadcast of The $1 million Queen’s Plate at 4:30 p.m. ET on TSN and CTV.

To help bring the experience to fans at home, Woodbine Entertainment has partnered with a stable of multi-platform content creators, celebrities and musicians, who will contribute unique #QueensPlate inspired content throughout the day.
