Souper Escape simply super in La Lorgnette Stakes

TORONTO, September 1, 2019 – Souper Escape, under confident handling by Luis Contreras, sprinted away from her rivals to win with authority in Sunday’s $100,000 La Lorgnette Stakes, at Woodbine.

Trained by Michael Trombetta for Live Oak Plantation, Florida-bred Souper Escape made her Canadian debut a winning one, powering home down the lane for an impressive performance in the 1 1/16-mile Tapeta route for three-year-old fillies, which drew seven starters.

It was longshot Naughty Me who seized the advantage early, as Souper Escape tracked the leader in second through opening splits of :24.66 and :49.44.

As the field entered the final turn, Contreras gave his filly the cue, and she responded in kind, the duo easily maintaining their advantage to win by 3 ¼-lengths. Last year’s Princess Elizabeth Stakes champ Bold Script rallied to get second, a half-length in front of La Feve, who took the Duchess Stakes at Woodbine on August 3. Winandyourin Gin, also owned by Live Oak Plantation, was sixth.

Souper Escape covered the distance in 1:42.71.

“She looks like she loves the synthetic,” praised Contreras. “I was watching replays of the last performance. I tried to do it (cover her up) until the five-eighths, but another horse came beside me, and my filly went a little bit aggressive. So I let her pick it up a bit.”

A daughter of Medaglia d’Oro-Cry and Catch Me, Souper Escape arrived at the La Lorgnette off a third-place finish in the Just Jenda Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 28. One race earlier, the dark bay earned her first stakes win, taking the Christiana at Delaware Park on June 19.

Souper Escape now has four wins and a third from nine career starts.

“She was nice and strong the whole way,” said Contreras.

Souper Escape returned $19, $8.40 and $5.10, and topped a 3-2 exactor with Bold Script ($4.20, $2.70) worth $66.20. The 3-2-6 triactor with La Feve ($4.20) paid $322.90, and the 3-2-6-5 superfecta completed by Wings of Dawn was worth $406.10 for $1.
