AMI'S MESA 'A LITTLE TOUGH;' CARROLL PROUD TO REPRESENT WOODBINE

Ami’s Mesa has a date in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint representing Canada and the Woodbine racing program at Del Mar on Saturday.

Josie Carroll, who has trained the four-year-old Sky Mesa filly to an undefeated four-race campaign in 2017 for Ivan Dalos, is proud to represent the local track and her country.

“Very much so,” Carroll said, Friday morning. “We have a lot of very nice horses at Woodbine and it’s nice to be able to come down and showcase our part of the world.”

She does point to the tough task at hand in the seven-furlong race as Ami’s Mesa faces a tough group including favoured Unique Bella and reigning champion Finest City from a difficult post 14.

“It’s not ideal, but she’ll get over and save ground,” said Carroll, who was accompanied on the trip by Mike Pajak and Ursula Selby. “She arrived here Monday and has settled in well. She seems to be getting across the surface quite well and it seems to be a nice surface with a good cushion on it.”

Carroll says the Ontario-bred, who galloped around the Del Mar main track in Friday morning training, is another Woodbine horse with a strong personality. “She’s a little tough. She’s got a bit of attitude, but most of the good ones do.”

Like Dixie Moon, Carroll and Ami’s Mesa, nicknamed “Mimi”, are surrounded by high-profile horse racing connections in Barn CC, including Mike Maker and Todd Pletcher.

The Filly and Mare Sprint event goes at 1:14 p.m. PT (4:14 p.m. ET) as the third of nine title races on Saturday.
