How to Become an Owner

Owning a Thoroughbred racehorse is one of the most exciting ways to participate in Ontario’s racing industry. Whether you want to own a horse outright or join a partnership, the process is accessible, well‑supported, and designed to welcome new participants into the sport.

Ontario’s racing community is built on collaboration between owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, and industry organizations. As an owner, you become part of the team that keeps the sport thriving.

Where Owners Get Support: The HBPA

In Ontario, Thoroughbred owners are represented and supported by the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA).

The HBPA is the official organization that advocates for owners and trainers, offering:

  • Licensing guidance
  • Industry representation and advocacy
  • Benevolence programs
  • Owner resources and racetrack support

For anyone entering ownership, the HBPA is a key partner.

Which Type of Ownership Is Right For You?

There are several ways to become an owner, each offering different levels of involvement, cost and decision making:

  • Sole Ownership: Purchase and manage your own horse. You make all decisions regarding trainers, race placement, and long-term planning.
  • Partnership/ Co-Ownership: Share costs and responsibilities with one or more partners. This is one of the most comment entry points for new owners.
  • Syndicate Ownership: Buy a percentage of a horse through a managed group. Syndicates often provide structured communication, budgeting and race-day coordination.
  • Claiming Ownership: Purchase a horse out of a race for a set claiming price. Claiming races are a fast, straightforward way to enter ownership.

Licensing and Registration Requirements

To race a Thoroughbred in Ontario, owners must complete a few key regulatory steps:

  • AGCO Owner License: All owners must hold a valid Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) Owner License. This license ensures owners meet regulatory standards and are eligible to participate in racing.
  • Ownership Registration: Your horse's ownership must be properly record with The Jockey Club (Kentucky), the official registry for Thoroughbreds in North America.
  • Trainer Assignment: Every racehorse must be under the care of a licensed trainer. Your trainer oversees daily care, training, race entries and communications with racetrack officials.

How to Get Started

Beginning your ownership journey is easier than you may think.

Many first-time owners start by speaking with experienced industry professionals who can guide them through every step of the process.

Work with a Trainer: A licensed trainer can help you understand ownership costs, recommend suitable horses, and develop a racing plan that matches your goals.

Consult a Bloodstock Agent: Bloodstock agents provide expert advice when purchasing horses at public auctions or through private sales.

Join a Syndicate: Syndicates offer an affordable way to experience ownership while benefiting from professional management and shared expenses.

Attend the CTHS Ontario Yearling Sale: The annual CTHS Ontario Yearling Sale is one of the best places to begin your ownership journey. Buyers can meet Ontario breeders, inspect quality Ontario-bred yearlings, and purchase horses eligible for valuable provincial racing incentives.

More Than Owning a Horse

Owning a Thoroughbred is about far more than race results, it's about becoming part of an incredible sport and a close-knit community.

As an owner, you'll enjoy opportunities to:

  • Watch your horse train in the mornings
  • Experience exclusive paddock access on race day
  • Celebrate victories alongside your trainer, jockey, family, and partners
  • Support Ontario breeders and the local Thoroughbred industry
  • Build lasting friendships within the racing community

Whether your goal is competing at the highest level or simply experiencing the excitement of racehorse ownership, every journey begins with a single horse.
